This is especially important for the very young or the very old, where DMAE side effects may be most evident and dangerous. To date no adverse drug interactions have been reported, but safe dosage maximums have not been determined.

It is always possible to have an allergic reaction to any to any substance that is applied to the skin. There has been no reported problem from this particular side effect as yet, although dermatologists say that some amount of skin damage may be possible.

Cautions to Prevent DMAE Side Effects

Adverse DMAE side effects have yet to be reported. Nevertheless, medical professionals recommend that those who suffer from manic depression, epilepsy, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder not use DMAE, as it may cause these conditions to worsen. It is also not recommended for women who are pregnant or lactating, or those with kidney or liver disorders.

DMAE Side Effects When Used for Medical Treatment

Dosages of DMAE are recommended to start low and be built up over time. The reason for this is that side effects can occur if the dosage is too high before the body becomes accustomed to it. Insomnia, headache and muscle tension can result from initial high dosages. It can also cause the same changes that the use of amphetamines can in a person's alertness. It can also increase anxiety and restlessness, as well as irritability and over stimulation. Elevated blood pressure and unexpected weight loss are also possible DMAE side effects.

First and foremost, what constitutes a safe dosage of DMAE for a child has not been formally established. It has been proven to help children with ADD since it was first used in the 1960s. It increases their alertness and concentration and provides the same beneficial effects that adults enjoy when taking DMAE. By all accounts and evidence it is by far a safer method of treatment than other drugs currently prescribed for ADD conditions. Studies that were done in the 1970's showed marked improvement of children who were hyperactive or had behavioral problems and learning disabilities. This would make you wonder what the attraction of drugs such as Ritalin might be.
